Day
one.
Children gathering on an open field for the first day of play

The first game began — no forms, no conditions, just a level field where nobody had an advantage. Children came one by one, until the whole field was full.

Mixed-gender, open to all. No barriers, from the very first day.

By the end of the first session, every child asked the same thing — are you coming back tomorrow? That's when we know it worked.

Field notes

Children playing a ball game together

In one community, frisbee never really landed. They liked playing with a ball instead. The game changed. The trust didn't have to.

Two rules, from day one: no name-calling, no fighting. Nothing else was ever enforced as strictly.

02
The classroom
followed.
Children sitting together in an informal classroom circle

Once children trust us, the classroom begins. Letters through songs. Numbers through games.

A child stood up and said their name — in English — for the first time.

Their parents didn't expect that.

Field notes

We didn't start by asking children to study. One child asked us to teach her English — sport had brought them to us; now they were asking for a classroom too.

A tarpaulin shelter built over bamboo poles for the classroom

Our first classroom wasn't really a classroom. One father built a roof with his own hands so his children could have somewhere to learn. We brought the teachers and materials — the community built the space.

03
They started
leading.
A child leading the group through a warm-up exercise

At first, we asked them to lead the assembly. Soon, they were leading it on their own.

Leadership came out. It wasn't put in.

Field notes

Some children used to gamble with coins during breaks. We handed over the sports equipment freely instead of keeping it locked away, and that habit stopped almost entirely on its own. Sometimes you don't need to force a bad habit out — you just need to put something better in front of them.

“Some of the quietest kids are the ones stepping up to lead now. Watching that happen has been one of the best parts of this.”

Ready

for school.

Sport builds trust. The classroom builds the foundations: basic literacy and numeracy, confidence, and the routine of learning with others. Every child, ready to enter school — and ready to keep learning.

Literacy

Reading, writing, foundational English — through classroom lessons, songs, and games.

Discipline

Routines built on the field, carried into the classroom.

Confidence

The confidence to enter school, participate, and keep showing up.

05

Sport.

School. Together.

Community session

School isn't the finish line. Morning classroom sessions continue strengthening the foundations. Evening sports sessions keep children engaged, connected, and coming back.

As communities grow, every one builds its own team — competing in tournaments while continuing to learn Spirit of the Game.

Sport and education on two rails, running together.

Field notes

Children performing at their Annual Day celebration

The children choreographed their own dances and designed the event poster themselves for their first ever Annual Day.

Children and coaches sitting together in a reflection circle after a session

Nobody heads home straight after the game. Everyone sits in a circle and talks about what went well, what didn't, and how they can be better next time.

Two models. Three communities.

Sport and education running together. We learn to play and play to learn.

Sport + Classroom session
Sport + Classroom

Sport opens the door. Classroom follows.

Every session runs sport and structured learning side by side. Children come for the game and stay for the classroom — building literacy, English, and confidence week by week.
